Limitations of BMI

  • BMI does not distinguish between muscle mass and fat mass. Muscular athletes may have a high BMI but low body fat.
  • BMI does not account for age, sex, or ethnicity differences in body composition.
  • BMI is a screening tool, not a diagnostic tool. Consult a healthcare provider for a full health assessment.
  • For children and teens (ages 2 through 19), BMI is interpreted using age- and sex-specific percentile charts.

Formula

Imperial: BMI = (Weight in pounds × 703) ÷ (Height in inches)2

Metric: BMI = Weight in kg ÷ (Height in meters)2
