Replacing a roof is one of the most significant home improvement investments you'll make. Understanding how to calculate roofing materials ensures you get accurate contractor quotes and, if you're doing it yourself, order the right amount of shingles, underlayment, and accessories.

Our roofing calculator handles the complex math of roof pitch and material estimation automatically. But knowing the fundamentals helps you verify quotes and understand what you're paying for.

Understanding Roofing Squares

Roofing materials are sold by the "square" - a unit equal to 100 square feet of roof area. This standardized measurement makes it easy to compare prices and estimate materials across different roof sizes.

Roofing Squares = Total Roof Area รท 100

How to Measure Your Roof

Method 1: Direct Measurement

If safely accessible, measure each roof section directly:

  1. Measure the length and width of each rectangular section
  2. Calculate area (length ร— width) for each section
  3. Add all sections together for total roof area
  4. Divide by 100 to get roofing squares

Method 2: From the Ground

Measure the footprint and apply a pitch multiplier:

  1. Measure the building footprint (length ร— width)
  2. Add eave overhangs (typically 1-2 feet on each side)
  3. Multiply by the pitch factor for your roof slope

Roof Pitch Factors

Roof pitch affects actual surface area. Common pitch multipliers:

  • Flat to 3/12: 1.03
  • 4/12: 1.054
  • 5/12: 1.083
  • 6/12: 1.118
  • 8/12: 1.202
  • 10/12: 1.302
  • 12/12: 1.414

A 1,500 sq ft footprint with a 6/12 pitch: 1,500 ร— 1.118 = 1,677 actual sq ft or 16.77 squares.

Calculating Shingles and Bundles

Most asphalt shingles come 3 bundles per square. For 17 squares:

  • Shingle bundles: 17 ร— 3 = 51 bundles
  • Add 10% waste: 51 ร— 1.10 = 57 bundles
  • Ridge cap bundles: 1 per 35 linear feet of ridge/hip

Roofing Cost Estimates (2026)

  • 3-tab shingles: $90-120 per square (materials)
  • Architectural shingles: $120-180 per square (materials)
  • Professional installation: $300-500 per square (total)
  • Underlayment: $15-45 per roll (covers 2 squares)

Frequently Asked Questions

How many bundles of shingles do I need?

Divide your roof area by 100 to get squares, then multiply by 3 for bundles. A 2,000 sq ft roof needs 20 squares ร— 3 = 60 bundles, plus 10% for waste = 66 bundles.

What is roof pitch and why does it matter?

Roof pitch is the slope expressed as rise over run (e.g., 6/12 means 6 inches of rise per 12 inches of horizontal run). Steeper roofs have more surface area than the same footprint with a shallow pitch, requiring more materials.

How much does a new roof cost?

In 2026, expect $8,000-15,000 for a typical 1,500-2,000 sq ft roof with architectural shingles, including tear-off, materials, and professional installation. Costs vary by region and roof complexity.
