How to Use the Sales Tax Calculator

Three Calculation Modes

  • Add Tax: Enter price before tax + tax rate โ†’ get tax amount and total price
  • Reverse (Tax Included): Enter total with tax โ†’ get original price and tax amount
  • Find Tax Rate: Enter original price and total โ†’ calculate what tax rate was applied

US State Sales Tax Rates (2026)

Sales tax rates vary by state and can also include local taxes. Our calculator includes current state base rates. Note that some states have no sales tax:

  • No Sales Tax: Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire, Oregon
  • Highest Rates: California (7.25%), Tennessee (7%), Louisiana (4.45% + local)
  • Most Common: 6-7% range for most states

Sales Tax Formula

The basic formulas are:

  • Tax Amount: Price ร— (Tax Rate / 100)
  • Total Price: Price + Tax Amount
  • Original Price (from total): Total / (1 + Tax Rate / 100)
