What is Standard Deviation?

Standard deviation (σ or s) measures how spread out numbers are from the mean. A low standard deviation means data points are close to the mean; a high standard deviation means they're spread out.

The Formula

Population Standard Deviation (σ):

σ = √[Σ(xᵢ - μ)² / N]

Sample Standard Deviation (s):

s = √[Σ(xᵢ - x̄)² / (n-1)]

Use sample when working with a subset; use population when you have all data.

Step-by-Step Calculation

  1. Calculate the mean (average)
  2. Subtract the mean from each data point (deviation)
  3. Square each deviation
  4. Find the average of squared deviations (variance)
  5. Take the square root of the variance

The 68-95-99.7 Rule

For normally distributed data:

  • 68% of data falls within 1 standard deviation of the mean
  • 95% falls within 2 standard deviations
  • 99.7% falls within 3 standard deviations
