How to Use the Income Tax Calculator

Our federal income tax calculator estimates your tax liability using 2026 tax brackets. Enter your gross income and filing status to see a breakdown by tax bracket, your effective tax rate, and estimated take-home pay.

Understanding Tax Brackets

The US uses a progressive tax system, meaning different portions of your income are taxed at different rates. Only income within each bracket is taxed at that bracket's rate—not your entire income at the highest rate you reach.

2026 Federal Tax Brackets

Tax brackets are adjusted annually for inflation. Filing status affects bracket thresholds:

  • Single: Standard individual filing
  • Married Filing Jointly: Couples filing together (wider brackets)
  • Married Filing Separately: Married but filing individually
  • Head of Household: Unmarried with qualifying dependent

Standard Deduction

The standard deduction reduces your taxable income before tax brackets apply. For 2026, approximate amounts are:

  • Single: $14,600
  • Married Filing Jointly: $29,200
  • Head of Household: $21,900

Marginal vs Effective Tax Rate

Marginal rate is the rate on your last dollar of income (your highest bracket). Effective rate is your total tax divided by total income—the actual percentage of income paid in taxes. Effective rate is always lower than marginal rate due to progressive brackets.

Limitations

This calculator provides estimates for federal income tax only. It does not include:

  • State and local income taxes
  • FICA taxes (Social Security and Medicare)
  • Tax credits (Child Tax Credit, EITC, etc.)
  • Itemized deductions beyond the standard deduction
