Simplifying Fractions

Mixed Numbers

A mixed number combines a whole number and a fraction (e.g., 2 1/2). To convert:

• Mixed to Improper: (whole × denominator) + numerator, keep denominator. 2 1/2 = (2×2+1)/2 = 5/2
• Improper to Mixed: Divide numerator by denominator. 5/2 = 2 remainder 1 = 2 1/2

Finding Common Denominators

To add or subtract fractions, they need the same denominator. Find the least common multiple (LCM) of both denominators, then convert each fraction.
