How to Use the Scientific Calculator

Our free online scientific calculator handles advanced mathematical operations including trigonometry, logarithms, exponents, and more. Whether you're a student working through algebra or calculus, or a professional needing quick calculations, this tool provides accurate results instantly.

What is a Scientific Calculator?

A scientific calculator is a type of electronic calculator designed to perform mathematical operations beyond basic arithmetic. It handles trigonometric functions (sin, cos, tan), logarithms, exponents, roots, and factorial calculations. Unlike basic calculators, scientific calculators follow proper order of operations (PEMDAS/BODMAS).

Available Functions

  • Trigonometry: sin, cos, tan and their inverses (asin, acos, atan)
  • Logarithms: log (base 10) and ln (natural log)
  • Powers & Roots: x², x³, xʸ, √, ³√
  • Constants: π (pi) and e (Euler's number)
  • Other: Factorial (n!), absolute value, parentheses grouping
  • Memory: Store, recall, add to, and clear memory values

Degree vs Radian Mode

Trigonometric functions can be calculated in degrees (360° in a circle) or radians (2π in a circle). Use degree mode for geometry and everyday angles. Use radian mode for calculus and advanced mathematics. Toggle between modes using the DEG/RAD button.

Order of Operations

This calculator follows the standard order of operations:

  1. Parentheses (innermost first)
  2. Exponents and roots
  3. Multiplication and division (left to right)
  4. Addition and subtraction (left to right)

Common Examples

  • Find the sine of 30°: Set to DEG mode, enter 30, press sin → Result: 0.5
  • Calculate 2⁵: Enter 2, press xʸ, enter 5, press = → Result: 32
  • Find log base 10 of 100: Enter 100, press log → Result: 2
  • Calculate √144: Enter 144, press √ → Result: 12
